Are your kids going stir crazy at home? Do you need a fun, new activity to do with them? Here is a great art project idea to get your kids active and creative, and get rid of that dreaded “bored” word. I love to find new and creative art projects to get the kids entertained and creative. One of my favorites is Salad Spinner Art. Who knew you could make art out of grandma’s old salad spinner?

Salad Spinner Art is a simple project that kids can’t get enough of. We’ve been doing this project for years in daycare and preschool back when I was a teacher. All you need is a cheap salad spinner, paper, paint, bowls, and spoons. Salad spinners can be picked at any Walmart, Target, etc and even your local dollar store or thrift store. Just look in the kitchen supply section. The paint is just plain old tempera paint that you can pick up in the arts and crafts section of any store.

Any paper will work, but generally thicker is better since the kids like to layer on the paint. Cut the paper down so that it will fit inside the salad spinner. Allow the kids to scoop a few spoonfuls of paint onto the paper. Place the lid on the spinner and let the kids spin away. The spinning will allow the paint to spread out on the paper and create some interesting patterns. If you use two or more colors of paint the mixing of the colors will create beautiful blends.

These can be adapted for various holidays and events just by changing the colors of the paint. Red and Green for Christmas, Pastels in Spring, Red and White for Valentine’s day, Oranges, Yellows and Browns in the Fall, etc. This project is perfect for kids from preschool age all the way to teens. For a paint project it is actually very clean and perfect to do at home, in school, childcare, girl scouts, playgroups, etc.

No matter the project, it is always good to do art with your kids. They need a chance to be creative. Art projects are an opportunity to disconnect them from the mind-numbing electronics and get them active instead. Art projects and craft activities are a great way for families to spend time together. So grab yourself a few inexpensive supplies and get creating!
