The Super Bowl is almost here! With the big game just around the corner, many people purchase nice, new flat screen TVs to better see the action. But there is one important piece of a television purchase that we all forget about – mounting the TV securely to the wall. Did you know that every three weeks a child is killed from a tipping TV? It’s a scary statistic. We love these nice TVs but we need to be aware of the danger they pose.
A few years ago my son tipped over our TV on top of himself. I have always had our TV’s anchored somehow. But as a military family we move constantly. When we moved from Alaska to California we had a few days in our house after all the furniture was packed and taken away. We kept a small 25 inch flat screen in the house so we’d have something to watch. Since we were about to move, the TV was not anchored to the wall or the furniture. We had it just sitting on a window bench seat. My youngest Owen, then 1 1/2, pulled the TV over onto himself while I was in the kitchen. The crash and scream stopped my heart.

We were lucky. Since it was such a small television and it fell from less than two feet Owen was fine. He just had a few small bruises but it was then I saw how it could be so much worse. Kids are fast! It doesn’t matter how closely you watch them, there is always a moment when you have to look away, and it only takes a moment. Flat screen TVs are especially dangerous because they have such a narrow base that they balance on. They easily can tip at the slightest bump or nudge, and those TVs are incredible heavy. As the presence of flat screens has increased, so has the frequency of injuries from tip-overs. In the last 10 years the frequency has increased 31%!
I would like to take a minute to convince all of you how important it is to anchor your televisions. Whether you are buying a new TV for the Super Bowl or already have one set up in your house, its important to get it anchored. With flat screen TVs the easiest and most secure way is to mount the TV to the wall. After what happened in our house you can guarantee ours are! SANUS makes many different models of TV mounts that you can use to keep your flat screen safe and secure.
I encourage you to visit TVSafety.org to learn more about the dangers of tipping televisions and how to keep your children safe. We have 3 TVs
Hubby has a tv in the living room. It’s not that big and isn’t anchored. I have an old style 19″ tv in the basement for workout dvds. Not anchored.
I think it would be nice if Hubby mounted the tv on the wall. Or better yet, put it in his office, as I don’t watch tv. lol
no, it is not anchored
We have 1 tv anchored and the other 2 are not. I would like them anchored

We only have 1 tv in our home, we don’t currently have it anchored though. Will definitely have to get it done, with kids especially it can be dangerous! Thanks for the review!
We only have one television and it’s been like that ever since I can remember, even when I was single and at home. We only have it on the stand and would prefer to have it wall-mounted.
Yes, we do. Worry is always there when it comes to kids.
we don’t have any anchored yet hope to win
